Centre L-R: Chief Executive Steve White, Joe, Lord Provost Duncan, Neil McKnight, Housing & Assets Director with customers from Blackwood Court and Charleston

Dundee City West MSP Joe FitzPatrick, the newly elected Lord Provost of Dundee, Bob Duncan, and local residents and the housing management team of Blackwood, celebrated the 40th anniversary of the housing and social care provider at Blackwood Court where the organisation first opened its doors in the 1970s.

Joe FitzPatrick, MSP for Dundee East said; “I have supported Blackwood tenants and worked with the organization several times and I am pleased that this special day is being celebrated in Dundee. Doctor Margaret Blackwood campaigned tirelessly for the rights of disabled people and we are still fortunate today for her efforts.”

Bob Duncan, Lord Provost of Dundee City Council commented; “I am delighted to join the customers and staff of Blackwood today in my first official duty as new Lord Provost of Dundee.  Blackwood has several housing developments in Dundee and has served those tenants well over the past forty years.  The services it provides to our community are integral and has enhanced the lives of many individuals and their families.  I wish the organization all the best for the next forty years!”

Blackwood was a revolutionary organisation when it was founded in 1972 by Doctor Margaret Blackwood, with a bold ambition to provide disabled people with the option to live independently in their own home with the required level of care and support.

During the forty years, Blackwood has expanded throughout the whole of Scotland, to provide thousands of people with housing and care options.

Steve White Interim Chief Executive commented;

“Today marks a very special occasion for Blackwood and its tenants.  It’s about celebrating the past forty years and remembering the challenges and successes which have been achieved along the way.  But it’s also about looking to the future, recognising the priorities that lie ahead for Blackwood and more importantly our customers.  Over the next twelve months our staff will be joining forces with customers to host a series of fund raising events, money raised will be reinvested into commemorative projects which matter most to our tenants and services users.”
